Dear colleagues
You may be interested in the following evening seminar. Please note the
slightly later start time, and the alternative venue, that is different from
the usual SRA evening seminars.
SRA/LGA Evening Seminar
5:30pm, 28th April 2004 (light refreshments from 5:00pm)
at the Local Government Association
Local Government House, Smith Square, London SW1P 3HZ
Participation in Studies of Poverty:
Does it Make for Richer Research?
Participatory research aims to give people with direct experience of the
subject under consideration more of a voice in the research process. This
means going beyond including quotations from participants, to making the
research an interactive process in which they have more influence.
Fran Bennett and Moraene Roberts have just written a report for the Joseph
Rowntree Foundation (see
http://www.jrf.org.uk/knowledge/findings/socialpolicy/334.asp), which
examines the case for participatory research on poverty and gives an
overview of participatory research on poverty in the UK. The report
included case studies of four projects (both national and international)
that used participatory approaches in their research and inquiry into
poverty. The authors will describe and discuss these four projects -
highlighting not only what worked, but also what lessons can be learned -
before making recommendations for both researchers and those who commission
research on how to take participatory research on poverty forward.
Fran Bennett is a social policy analyst and academic at the University of
Oxford, and Moraene Roberts is an anti-poverty activist with ATD Fourth
World. They have both been involved in trying to put participatory
approaches into practice.
The seminar is free to SRA members and LGA staff, while a small charge of £5
is payable by non-members/staff. The seminar will take place at the Local
Government Association, Local Government House, Smith Square, London SW1P
3HZ (see http://www.lga.gov.uk/Documents/MAPP4.pdf for directions). There
is no need to book: simply turn up on the evening.
The seminar will start promptly at 5:30pm, followed by drinks at a local bar
at 7.00pm.
The Social Research Association and Local Government Association look
forward to welcoming you.
Best wishes
Juliet
