medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. April) is the feast day of:
Leo of Alexandria (d. 202) Leonidas was a philosopher and father of
Origen. He was martyred in the reign of Septimius Severus.
Tarbula (d. 345) Tarbula was a sister of St. Simeon Barsabae. She
was a consecrated virgin. After her brother's martyrdom, Jews
accused T. of making the wife of Shah Shapur II sick through use of
witchcraft. She was then sawed in half.
Persia martyrs (d. 376) Commemorated today is a very large number of
Christians killed on Good Friday in the reign of Shah Shapur II.
They included about 25 bishops, 250 priests and deacons, and a lot of
monks and nuns.
Agapitus I (d. 536) Agapitus was a native of Rome and served as
archdeacon before being elected pope in 535. He almost immediately
left on an embassy to Constantinople, trying to persuade Justinian
not to attack Italy. He died there; the body was returned to Rome.
Theodore of Sykeon (d. 613) Theodore was a Galatian (Asia Minor) who
became a monk at Jerusalem before founding several monasteries back
in Galatia. In c. 590 he became bishop of Anastasiopolis, but
resigned beforehis death.
Opportuna (d. c. 770) The sister of St. Chrodegang of Sees,
Opportuna became a nun at a young age and in time abbess of Monteuil
(Normandy). She was apparently an extremely good abbess. Her cult
is popular in France.
Wolfhelm (d. 1091) Wolfhelm was from the Rhineland. He became a monk
at St. Maximin's, Trier, then St. Pantaleon, Cologne, and went on to
serve as abbot of Gladbach, Siegburg, and Brauweiler. He was a
biblical scholar and strong promoter of the monastic life.
