My google search only came up with 'twistering mill' in Norwich in
1730s, so I looked for 'twisting' and found
http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/plaza/hk67/milltour.htm which is
Cotswold Woollen Weavers and a number of other historical references
amongst dozens of references to modern twisting mills and their
products, all textile industry stuff. There's a picture of a modern
machine at http://www.beste.it/english/1234.htm
I didn't look all the way through the google of 'twisting machine' but I
didn't see a picture or illustration of an old one. However I've been to
Cotswold WW and they are very interested and helpful and I am sure they
would help with a slightly older one and possibly have earlier
illustrations!
So, from my standpoint as a hand spinner, I assume they are plying
machines ... I could show you how to do it on two drop spindles ...
