Dear List
I have run across an interesting article possibly written by Dr Andrew
Turnbull, the founder of the a British colony in New Symerna, East
Florida, in 1768. Written in the early 1760s and published in a
Scottish journal, it details the travels of a 'Mr Turnbull' in Italy
and the islands of Greece - notably, the author states that he is on
his way to Symerna and other places in Asia Minor. Since Turnbull's
colonists were taken primarily from Greece and Minorca, this might
have been the trip that he took to find workers who, he believed,
could withstand the Florida heat. (Indeed, Dr Turnbull's wife was
from Symerna and, hence, the name of the colony).
Patricia C. Griffin wrote a book on this settlement a few years back:
Mullet on the Beach - The Minorcans of Florida 1768-1788. However, I
have been able to locate her contact details. Any thoughts on sources
that might aid me in determining if my 'Mr Turnbull' is 'Dr Turnbull'
will be much appreciated.
Yours,
Matthew.
