Professors

German / Spanish
Faculty of Arts

Founded in 1845, NUI Galway now has over 13,000 students and over 1,000
staff. The University has recently developed a Strategic Plan and
associated Academic Plan and is engaged in a number of major academic
and infrastructural developments.

PROFESSORSHIP OF GERMAN
PROFESSORSHIP OF SPANISH

Applications are invited for the above full-time, permanent posts.
There are four modern languages departments in the Faculty of Arts, and
both the German and Spanish departments work in significant
collaboration with the French and Italian departments as part of the
Modern Languages Group. The successful applicants for the
Professorships of German and Spanish will be expected to work towards
increased collaboration in the Modern Languages Group in areas
including the shared Multimedia Language Laboratory, further developing
classes and authoring texts and materials utilising associated software
(CAN 8); the delivery of additional postgraduate degree programmes (the
Group currently offers an interdisciplinary Higher Diploma/Masters in
Translation Studies); the expansion of research output in the area of
languages; and the further development of the regional centre for
European languages.

Professor of German

The Professor of German will lead an existing department of nine full-
time staff equivalents, including lecturers, applied language teachers,
lektors and part-time assistants. In addition to delivering language,
literature, social and cultural history courses leading to the degrees
of BA and BA International, the German department teaches technical and
specialist German within designated degree courses to students of
Commerce, Law, Information Technology, Science, and Engineering. The
department has Socrates exchange programmes with eighteen German
universities as well as a student scholarship exchange contract with
Bamberg University. It provides programmes at Masters and PhD levels
and contributes to community and outreach activities.

Applicants for the Chair of German shall possess:

- A PhD or equivalent and appropriate teaching experience at third
level;
- A distinguished record of research as evidenced by publications in
top-ranking journals;
- The ability to provide dynamic leadership in the development of the
German department’s activities, especially in further enhancing its
research profile;
- A strong commitment to teaching at all levels within the University.
Candidates with an interest and expertise in any specialism are invited
to apply. Candidates with expertise in modern Germanophone literature
and culture are especially welcome.
- A commitment to involvement with students that enables the
development of students’ communicative and thinking skills;
- A commitment to the region and community as exemplified by outreach
education initiatives.

Professor of Spanish

The Professor of Spanish will lead an existing department of over six
full-time staff equivalents, including lecturers, applied language
teachers and language assistants. The Spanish department is the largest
in Ireland in terms of student numbers, with most students presenting
as beginners when they commence their BA or BA International Spanish
studies. The Department is committed to the Socrates programme of
exchanges and expects that all students of Spanish to degree level
should spend a year at one of the 13 exchange university partners in
Spain or Mexico. In addition to language studies, the Department offers
literary and cultural modules that cover literature in Spain and
Spanish America, Spanish-language cinema, economic and social Spanish,
including linguistics and translation studies. The Department also
contributes to programmes in the faculties of Commerce (B.Comm); Law
(B.Corp. Law); and Engineering (BSc in Information Technology).
At postgraduate level (MA, MLitt, and PhD), Spanish studies cover both
literature and translation.

Applicants for the Chair of Spanish shall possess:

- A PhD or equivalent and appropriate teaching experience at third
level;
- A distinguished record of research as evidenced by publications in
top-ranking journals;
- The ability to provide dynamic leadership in the development of the
Spanish department’s activities, especially in enhancing its research
profile;
- A strong commitment to teaching at all levels within the University.
Candidates with an interest and expertise in any specialism are invited
to apply. Candidates with expertise in peninsular Spanish studies are
