Dear Sarah
I have read the consultation response summary and the emailed comments that have followed with interest.
As with the others, I am not surprised by a diversity of views and have experienced this in other 'expert' groups. We are in a field here which is at an early stage of development and much of the 'effective practice' that is being currently cited will need to be tested and re-tested before we can be confident of its value generally. In a similar way, the national debates about e-learning strategy have refered to concepts that, whilst logical & compelling, have yet to be fully tested in practice and there is much proof-of-concept work to be done.
I believe that, when we talk about the design of pedagogies for e-learning, we need to be very clear about the different personal profiles that the intended learners will be bringing to the experience. All of our evaluation so far shows that multiple routes through materials are necessary, particularly when providing for the lifelong learner.
I agree, therefore with those comments refering to understanding the learning experience on-line and the value that hands-on practitioners can bring to the debate.
Sorry I couldn't make the first meeting. I shall look forward to the next one.
Regards
Tony
