APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING
Biographic-Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM) Workshop in Newcastle
Friday 18 June 2004, 9.30 am to 4.30 pm
Room 520, Fifth Floor, Claremont Bridge Building
University of Newcastle
Both pure and applied social research increasingly use 'personal narrative
methods' for exploring lived experience, professional practice and societal
structures. BNIM is one such method. This is an opportunity to sense and
explore its potential for you.
The leaders of the workshop, Prue Chamberlayne (Open University) &
Tom Wengraf (Middlesex University) have been involved in doing such research
both nationally and internationally and in training others to use the BNIM
approach.
They co- edited Biography and social exclusion in Europe: experiences and
life journeys (Policy Press 2003). Prue has just published Biographical
methods and professional practice (Policy Press 2004). Tom authored
Qualitative research interviewing: biographic narrative and semi-structured
method (2001 Sage). They are currently engaged in a three-year qualitative
evaluation of the work of a Healthy Living Centre in East London.
They are on the editorial board of the Journal of Social Work Practice.
To ensure the quality of the workshop, the number of participants will be
limited to 15. You will be introduced to:
· The conceptual basis of doing narrative interviews, and a
particularly powerful system of analysing the narratives obtained in those
interviews
· a hands-on experience of the concepts and principles in practice
The workshop will start at 9.30 am and end at 4.30 pm, with a break from
12.30 to 1.30 pm (bring your own mid-day food) and coffee / tea breaks. The
cost for the full day workshop, including tea and coffee is £50. If you
