italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear List Members,
I am exploring the possibility of developing a project on the use of
tropes and other forms of imagery and perception in the work of
Federigo Tozzi. I've read a lot of the major criticism (Maxia,
Debenedetti, Baldacci, Cavalli Pasini, Luti, the Fontanella volume,
other) and theoretical analyses of structure and metaphor (some of
the above, plus Todorov, Katz, Cacciari (cognitive science approach),
Ricouer), but these have not brought me much closer to understanding
the dynamics of his unusual linguistic/imagistic/descriptive style;
e.g., how he creates it, its narrative functions, its effect on the
reader (haunting, estranging), the role of the reader in deciphering
it. Does anyone know of critical and/or theoretical works that would
help me unravel the mystery of Tozzi's modes of figuration and
perception? His "expressionism"? Are there any general theories of
perception and/or imagination that would be pertinent? I think it
would also be useful to look at works on rhetorical devices in
general, and would appreciate suggestions in this regard as well.
Any of these relatively "technical" parameters in Tozzi that I can
flesh out might be useful for a comparison to linguistic strategies
employed by other "irrational" writers - e.g., Savinio, Soffici,
Palazzeschi, Landolfi, Bontempelli - in another phase of research.
I look forward to and thank you in advance for any and all comments
regarding my inquiry.
Sincerely,
Carla Bregman
PhD candidate, Columbia University
