How about using GridSite and htcp (ie HTTPS with GSI proxies) instead of
globus-gridftpd and globus-url-copy (GridFTP and GSI proxies)? htcp has
no Globus dependencies (it uses OpenSSL and curl which are standard
RedHat libraries, but it can readily be statically compiled too.)
http://www.gridpp.ac.uk/gridsite/1.0.x/htcp.1.html is the htcp man page.
