I imagine he used java just because it's a very easy way to get a
stream of bytes from a URL. I wouldn't say wget was more standard
(unlike java it's not guaranteed to be present on a stardev system)
though if we're going to include this functionality in NDF/CONVERT
then as you imply it might make sense to put the wget functionality
and source code (or similar) into one of those packages themselves
rather than having a java callout.
