I think it is time to open this up to discussion (Is Alan still
listening?). Alan gave Al some patches for NDF and convert to allow NDF to
read files via a URL. Does anyone know what state these patches are in and
whether they can be committed without affecting other things?

Al,
Please can this dialogue go directly with David (and perhaps Alan).
The first I heard of this was yesterday morning.
I'll add the url2ndf stuff once the NDF library is ready.

Maybe I was a bit hasty in saying I would put Alan's mods into the NDF
stardev system this morning. Are they really sufficiently tested to
warrant inclusion in stardev? Do we know for sure they do not break
anything else? I have come across at least one place where I cannot be
sure that the "normal" behaviour of NDF will not be affected. And I cannot
say that I currently understand the other changes in sufficient detail to
be happy with them going into the dev system - I think I need to peruse
them quite a bit more before I see what is going on.
How urgent is it that these changes get into /stardev?
