Dear Mark
Thank you for the information, it has proved very useful in thinking about
the criteria I will use to perform the review. My PhD is examining the
impact of PBL on the intellectual development of initial trainee teachers. I
have designed and implemented a PBL programme for the Year Two Professional
Studies course within our BA(QTS) in Primary Education degree. This is our
first year of the course and is proving to be very popular with the students
and the tutors. It is for this reason that I have steered my doctoral
studies towards this. I have found little evidence of any real cognitive
gains and mainly my conclusions from the literature concern motivation. I
have also found very little research on PBL and teacher education, except in
Australia. I am very eager to examine Bigg's concepts of deep and surface
learning and whether our students can engage in PBL effectively, in what has
historically been an 'highly academic' model of learning as PBL has been
used mainly in medical schools which are highly selective in terms of
'academic' qualifications. I would be very happy to seek any collaborative
multi-disciplinary projects.
Best Wishes

Dear Graham
this looks very interesting - Have you seen our Pilot SR & meta analysis of
PBL - at
http://www.ltsn-01.ac.uk/resources/features/pbl
this featured mainly education of health professionals. I am very keen to
get a multi-disciplinary review off the ground though. Be interested to hear
more about your work

Dear all,
I am just trying to complete a systematic review of the literature
concerning intellectual development using PBL as a learning model and the
use of PBL in initial trainee teacher programmes. Any ideas/ advice would be
gratefully received.
Best Wishes
