Advance Notice
UCE - Health Development Projects Office
2004 National Health Development Conference
Wednesday 15 September 2004
Millennium Point, Birmingham
Outline
Following the success of our first annual conference last year (report available), we are pleased to be planning this year's one-day Health Development event for :
Wednesday 15 September 2004
Millennium Point, Birmingham
Aim : To examine how radical our UK practice in Health Development must be to respond to the health and equality agendas, and the implications of this for professional development.
Audience : Everybody with an interest in 'public health' in its broadest sense, and particularly people with substantial involvement in health development / health promotion.
Cost : approx. £ 150.00 + VAT (to be confirmed)
Our much-welcomed theme for 2003 was 'Promoting Health, Developing Ourselves', reflecting the need to strengthen greatly the support for Health Promotion Specialists as a professional group in the light of reorganisations in public health work and developments in policy.
This year we are looking at a theme such as 'Health Development - a Risky Business', which among others would tackle issues such as :
* The need to take risks and embrace 'failure' in the course of the innovative work needed to promote health equality
* The implications of this for leadership in health development
* A radical look at the neglected risks from conventional public policy
* A critical look at conventional messages about risk and 'risk factors'
* An examination of what we mean by effectiveness and efficiency
* Update from the DoH project on the role of Health Promotion Specialists
* Implications for academic training and CPD
* Practical lessons from local initiatives in the UK
We will be publicising further details during 2004, but whatever the final nature of the programme, the interest we've had from practitioners makes us confident thet this will yet again be an exciting and valuable contribution to the progress of Health Development work in the UK.
