Dear Katharine,
I have not yet put any candidates through the Level 1 ABC yet although I shall be this summer. I was told by the previous administrator of the ABC exam that the level 1 would only require pinyin and that the characters were to be introduced as a complementary exercise but would not be needed for the exams. I have within the last few days found out that they do require the characters for the reading exam. This has only come to light because I requested some time ago the sample exam material and they have just delivered it! You can imagine my surprise to see the characters.... I am about to write to their administrator to seek further guidance ......
