The Norfolk Identification and Recording Service for archaeological finds submits information on selected 20th-century finds for inclusion on the Norfolk Historic Environment Record. For example:-
Felthorpe 33090. White metal finger ring, with oval bezel depicting silhouette of a U-boat and inscribed U-BOOT KRIEG ('U-boat war'). Probably AD 1914-18. (finder R. Hollingdale).
It goes without saying that we include 20th-century buildings, structures, defences etc etc....

Subject: Twentieth century
Dear all
I am just in the process of putting together some notes for a talk I'm giving next week at IFA on the subject of managing twentieth century cultural resources. I have had one or two emails arising from a previous discussion detailing what for some might be rather surprising entries on SMRs/HERs. I'd welcome any additions though, and esp things that demonstrate the inclusiveness of SMRs/HERs. I know about military and industrial for eg, but what else now gets included, either as a matter of course, or exceptionally?
Also, has there been any attempt to synthesise information about 20th century on SMRs/HERs, and if not might that be a useful discussion to have. What should be included in other words. There is so much that could be included after all - its knowing where to stop, and recognising and reaching consensus on what is 'historic'.
John
