AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY
Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (United Kingdom)

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS
Contemporary Issues in Muslim Societies
The Aga Khan University - Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) is offering two Research Fellowships with a focus on Contemporary Issues in Muslim Societies. The fellowships will focus on: "Bio-medical Ethics and Higher Education in Muslim Societies" These positions will be offered to individuals who will spend three to six months carrying out a focused exploration of a subject of mutual interest to them and AKU-ISMC with a view to achieve specific research and information dissemination outcomes. In line with the overall University policy, these positions will be open to all, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, gender or national origin. The candidate will be paid a gross monthly salary of £2000, after deduction of Income Tax and National Insurance. In addition, AKU-ISMC will contribute where applicable, a maximum of £3000 towards the relocation expenses.

FELLOWSHIP IN BIO-ETHICS
The theme of Bio-ethics: A survey of discourses in religious communities and educational reforms in Muslim societies, has been chosen as a focus for AKU-ISMC's 2004 fellowship, not only because of its importance in current intellectual debates, including among Muslims, but also because of its relevance to the work of other components of AKU, especially the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Faculty has taken several initiatives in the area of bioethics consisting of an Ethical Review Committee, Hospital Ethics Committee and the Bioethics Group.

The fellowship will focus on discourses about bioethics in religious communities rather than only on Muslim communities. This comparative approach is preferred because many of the concerns faced by Muslims in this area are shared among all religious communities as they emerge from epistemological assumptions and worldviews common to all religions. The fellow will compile an annotated list of relevant: seminal publications; key conferences, seminars, workshops; and, public and private initiatives, including initiatives by hospitals/medical associations on biomedical issues. It is hoped that the work undertaken through the fellowship will be of significant value to research in the area of bio-ethics within and outside the University.

Expected outcomes may include: a publishable annotated bibliography on 'bioethics and religious discourses', available in multiple languages; a searchable webpage with bibliography and links to electronic resources on bio-ethics and education; and a publishable paper on the challenges, issues and debates in the field of bioethics and religious discourse.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

* A doctorate in any of the following: medicine, philosophy, sociology, law or other relevant fields.
* Reading and writing abilities in English, as well as, Arabic and/or Persian. Additional languages are an asset.
* Demonstrated interest in the field of bioethics (through appropriate publications, for example).

FELLOWSHIP IN HIGHER EDUCATION REFORM

This position will be linked with the 'Higher Education in Muslim Societies' project. The incumbent will help during the initial phase of the Project by collecting relevant data, contributing to the creation of steering committee and organisation of workshops.
