I understand this concern and wish that listservs could be somehow
"better" than the real world. However, I have seen several listservs
(and I am deliberately NOT talking about this one) in various areas of
thought which handle what some define as "personal" attacks by banning
the attacker who happens to be in the minority on the list.
I have also seen people "silenced" by the self-appointed moderators of
lists because their minority view and its assertion is defined as a
"personal" attack while personal attacks by the those holding the
orthodox or majority opinion are called "responses."
Finally, what do you expect of lists full of academics? We are a
contentious, sometimes nasty and sometimes vicious lot when it comes to
discussing personalities of our colleagues. Yet we also discuss plenty
of ideas. And, it takes two to make an argument.
