I have been a fairly quiet member of this mailing list, and has been
watching from a distance. But now I feel I should make my contribution for
the benefit and survival of this mailing list. I believe this is a really
good platform to discuss and share ideas. However, I guess that one
attribute for being good academics, activists, researchers, colleagues, etc
is to know that we have individual differences and therefore we should
consider that when we are using a public platform. I believe respect is a
virtue and should be maintained all the time. People can argue but should
still respect each other. Differing views can be tabled with respect. Lets
not confuse aggression and assertiveness. Assertiveness is standing up for
oneself in a way that does not violate the rights of another person. It is a
direct, honest and appropriate expression of one's feelings and opinions.
Contrary to assertiveness, aggressiveness is standing up for one's rights
that violates the rights of the other person. It results in humiliating and
putting down the other. Thus aggressiveness encompasses self-centredness,
inconsideration, hostility and arrogantly demanding. If our list is to grow
and benefit us all, I believe it is high time we should be assertive as
opposed to aggressive. Personally, I have benefitted from this list and I
think we really need to further the initial cause of this platform.
