Dear all,
We would like to recommend the addition of "Uniform Resource
Names (URN) to the proposal.
According to RFC 2396, URN is a subset of URI "The term
"Uniform Resource Name" (URN) refers to the subset of URI
that are required to remain globally unique and persistent
even when the resource ceases to exist or becomes
unavailable." and needs to be considered in the context of
what a URI identifies.
Furthermore there are official registered URN namespaces.
Further information are available at
http://www.iana.org/assignments/urn-namespaces and
http://www.uri.net/urn-nid-status.html.
In this context We would like to refer to the European Library Office
which also considered URNs within the metadata scheme
http://www.dlib.org/dlib/february04/vanveen/02vanveen.html.
In the following some examples for the integration of URNs
will be given.
1st Example:
We would like to suggest instead of
"Example formal identification systems include the Uniform
Resource Identifier (URI) (including the Uniform Resource
Locator (URL) ), the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and the
International Standard Book Number (ISBN)."
to formulate as follows
"Example formal identification systems include the Uniform
Resource Identifier (URI) (including the Uniform Resource
Locator (URL) and the Uniform Resource Name (URN)), the
Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and the International
Standard Book Number (ISBN)."
2nd Example:
Instead of
"It may identify a location or service because any type of
resource (including a location or service) can be identified
by a URI (including a URL) and described by a DC metadata
description. However, it is not an inherent property of a URL
that it identifies a location or service."
We would suggest
"It may identify a location or service because any type of
resource (including a location or service) can be identified
by a URI (including a URL, URN) and described by a DC
metadata description. However, it is not an inherent property
of a URL that it identifies a location or service."
3rd Example:
The proposal provides the following formulation
"Recommended best practice is to identify the resource by
means of a string or number conforming to a formal
identification system. Example formal identification systems
include the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) (including the
Uniform Resource Locator (URL)), the Digital Object
Identifier (DOI) and the International Standard Book Number (ISBN)."
We would recommend
"Recommended best practice is to identify the resource by
means of a string or number conforming to a formal
identification system. Example formal identification systems
include the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) (including the
Uniform Resource Locator (URL), Uniform Resource Name (URN)),
the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and the International
Standard Book Number (ISBN)."
