Dear all
To see the following, which I have just sent to the SMR/HER email group, for comment, info and discussion. I know there has been discussion about this recently but thought it could be usefully focussed on SMRs/HERs, given that there seems inconsistency on what different authorities think legimitate for including as 'historic'. Early motorways are included in some cases; military sites (inc Cold War) on most. But are there parameters that could usefully be established here.
One for discussion perhaps.
Here's the original:
'I am just in the process of putting together some notes for a talk I'm giving next week at IFA on the subject of managing twentieth century cultural resources. I have had one or two emails arising from a previous discussion detailing what for some might be rather surprising entries on SMRs/HERs. I'd welcome any additions though, and esp things that demonstrate the inclusiveness of SMRs/HERs. I know about military and industrial for eg, but what else now gets included, either as a matter of course, or exceptionally?
Also, has there been any attempt to synthesise information about 20th century on SMRs/HERs, and if not might that be a useful discussion to have. What should be included in other words. There is so much that could be included after all - its knowing where to stop, and recognising and reaching consensus on what is 'historic'.'
John
