[I posted the query below to the lom-cataloguing list, where Sarah Currier suggested that this list would be a more appropriate forum.]
I'm currently designing a database for RLOs our School has developed, or is in the process of developing, simply to keep track of them and allow users to list them in different views - currently I just have a quick 'n' dirty table online (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nursing/sonet/rlos/). Our strategic aim is to have a repository from which teachers and students can mix 'n' match RLOs to suit their needs, which will require extensive metadata cataloguing to store pedagogic information. Plus we want to be interoperable, soI want to use the UK LOM Core as a basis for the database. At the least, I'd want to incorporate most of the LOM Core mandatory fields in the database to future-proof the DB.
Looking at the 0.1 LOM Core spec (http://www.cetis.ac.uk/profiles/uklomcore) I'm having trouble getting my head around some of the fields. For instance, 1.1.1 Catalog and 1.1.2 Entry I just can't understand at all, not coming from a cataloguing background. It would really be helpful if I could see a practical implementation of the LOM Core to see what people have actually entered into these fields, as I learn better by example than by abstract rules. Can anyone point me to any practical implementations which I could look at?
Also, can anyone point me towards a list of the data types used in the LOM Core? Some, eg LangString, are clear to me, some, eg Container Element, aren't.
Finally, is it wise for me to use 0.1 as a basis, or should I hold fire for later versions?
And before anyone mentions it, we just don't have the money to cough up for the Intrallect system...
Many TIA for any help.
Cheers
Fred
