Web Conference
Date: April 1 at 10:30 am and again at 6:00 pm (Times are Eastern Standard,
USA; GMT-05:00).
These times have been selected to encourage participation by those for whom
a reasonable time in the USA would not be convenient. We assume that those
in Europe will find the earlier time convenient, while those in Asia, New
Zealand and Australia will find the later time convenient. However, whatever
your time zone, you may participate in either offering.

Abstract
One of the goals of Cognitive Systems Engineering is to support the
cognitive processes of people who operate information technology
applications such as decision support systems. This lecture examines three
questions:
· What types of cognition are we trying to support?
· What do we know about these types of cognition?
· How can we use Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) methods to learn what
we
need?
The field of CTA has matured in the past 20 years. Initially it seemed a
daring departure from controlled experimentation, and now it is a mainstay
of many system design and training efforts. The lecture considers the
current status of CTA methods that contribute to Cognitive Systems
Engineering projects.
Web Conferencing
Our Web Conferencing system allows participants to view the presenter's
slides, to hear the discussion, and to ask questions. Video images of the
presenter and the moderator may also be available. Participants will need a
Flash Player on their desk top. This is available as a free download (476k)
at:
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=Sh
ockwaveFlash.
This is already installed on many new Windows systems.
You will be required to register for the conference. CSEC members will be
advised of how and when to register. Non-members who receive this advisory
indirectly should contact Gavan Lintern at [log in to unmask] to get
on the non-member mailing list for this event (or may join by visiting
www.cognitive-systems.org).
.
You will be able to access the conference through our web site at
www.cognitive-systems.org. CSEC members will enter the conference with their
current user name and password. Non members will be advised of the guest
login via email.
Advice on how to test the system will be distributed in the week of March
22. Those who participate via modem may have difficulty with the video but
should be able to follow the slides. You should plan to test this well ahead
of time. Installation of the Flash player (if you do not already have it)
may take 30 minutes and you may experience some difficulty if you do not
have the appropriate Administrator privileges for your machine. At this
stage, we are uncertain whether there will be issues for those behind a
firewall. We plan to test that.
