UMIST
DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTATION
LECTURER IN HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION
******************************************************************
We are seeking to appoint a lecturer in HCI to join the Interactive System
Design group within the department. We welcome applications from researchers
with interests in:
* Multimedia and multimodal user interfaces
* Web and internet
* Assistive technology and User Interfaces for the elderly
* Adaptive and context aware UIs
* Socio-technical Systems design
We are looking for researchers who wish to join an expanding team with
interests in the above areas, however we also encourage applications from
researchers with interests in any area of HCI especially those from a
psychology/ cognitive science background.
The Interactive Systems Design group researches the theory, methods and
tools to improve the quality of human computer interaction. The Group
focuses on HCI-in-the-large, (user centred design of socio-technical
systems) as well as HCI-in-the-small (design of interactive artefacts).
Our research has a strong commitment to theory, in the context of developing
practical methods, techniques and tools. The group is composed of 11 staff,
organised into 2 cognate areas: Cognitive Engineering, and Cooperative
Systems Design.

UMIST
DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTATION
TWO LECTURESHIPS
The Department of Computation is one of the largest UMIST departments with
an established international teaching and research reputation, strong links
with industry and graduates who are highly rated by employers. The
department wishes to appoint to two posts:
1. LECTURER IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS: As part of a major expansion plan, the
Department is developing its Information Systems theme and has appointed
three leading Information Systems Professors (Professor Trevor Wood-Harper,
Professor Bob Wood and Professor Dave Wastell) from a 6* RAE rated
department. The department now seeks to complement these appointments with
this post at the lecturer level.
2. LECTURER: In addition, the Department invites applications for a further
Lecturer post in any of its three main research areas: Data and Decision
Engineering, Interactive Systems Design or Information Systems.
The Lecturer posts provide an excellent opportunity for new staff to develop
their research profiles, and industrial links. Applications from recent PhD
graduates with evidence of strong research potential are welcomed for these
posts. Successful applicants will be required to contribute to the
research, teaching and administrative activities of the Department. All
staff are allocated a balanced teaching load, although for new lecturers
this will be reduced to allow them to develop their research activities.
UMIST and the University of Manchester plan to create a new combined
university from October 2004. At this time, the Department will form a new
School of Informatics in the Faculty of Humanities which will include the
social sciences, business and management. It is expected that the theme of
information systems will be an important feature of the research and
teaching programmes in the new university and applicants will be expected to
take strong interest in the development of the IS theme in this context.
Prospective applicants may informally contact the Head of Department,
Professor Alistair Sutcliffe (both appointments)
([log in to unmask], Tel: 0161 200 3315), or Professor Bob Wood
([log in to unmask] Tel: 0161 200 3341) or Professor Trevor Wood-Harper
([log in to unmask], Tel: 0161 200 3339), for further information
on the Information Systems post.
Appointment will be made on the Lecturer scale £22,191-£33,679 per annum
(under review).
For an application form and further details please write to: The Personnel
Office, UMIST, PO Box 88, Manchester M60 1QD, enclosing a self-addressed
envelope (website: www.umist.ac.uk/university/jobs). The closing date is 16
April 2004. Please quote reference: COM/A/41. (Further information about
