TOURISM RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS
Applications are invited for two Ph.D. studentships within the Centre for
Tourism Policy Studies (Eastbourne Campus). Our research activities are
intellectually organised around the theme of Consumption. The studentships
are based across two of the key sub-themes, the Management of Tourism
Consumption and the Cultural Consumption of Tourism. The main supervisors
involved are: Dr. Catherine Palmer, Professor Peter Burns and Dr Marina
Novelli. The successful applicants will be expected to develop a programme
of research from within one of the following general areas:
* Cultural politics of tourism
* International tourism planning and development
* Tourism and social identity
* Tourism and material culture
* Rural tourism (regeneration and diversification)
* Seaside regeneration
* Tourism and visual representation
Each studentship comprises 3 years fully paid Ph.D. fees and a bursary of
£8,530 towards living costs. An additional annual allowance is provided for
such as conference attendance. There may be teaching opportunities
available, which will be paid at the relevant University rate.
The candidates will be enthusiastic and self-motivated with the ability to
work across disciplinary boundaries. A first class honours degree or a
Masters degree is required in any one of the following subjects: tourism,
anthropology, sociology, humanities, history, cultural geography, and
cultural studies. Graduates from other areas and disciplines will be
considered if they can demonstrate both engagements with the subject and
ability. Candidates with an honours degree must register for an MPhil/PhD.
