I think that, for the present, you should add --disable-shared to any
./configure commands, including the tree-wide configuration at the top
level. This disables building of shared libraries (surprise), and so
should deal with this hlp problem, the .dylib problems Brad's been
suffering from, and the monolith-building problem folk were struggling
with. It'll also half the compilation time.
We should revisit this in future, but it's not important to fix before
NAM, and possibly not worth spending too much effort on prior to the
ISO release.
It would, however, be good to fix in the slightly longer term than that,
so we should retain as an aim building all-shared libraries. It is
very likely not a big deal, since it likely consists only of the right
incantation to sort out {g,}libtool on OS X, and the right incantation
within alink to have the link done correctly.
Oh Brad, did you get a chance to find out if GNU sed magically solved
the libtool issue on OS X?
