Making ICT Work for Communities
Thursday 1 April 2004
Gardyne Road Campus University of Dundee
One day conference jointly organised by
Dept of Community Education University of Dundee
&
International Association of Community Development
Supported by Learning & Teaching Scotland
Purpose of the conference
The last few years has seen a dramatic increase in access to Information & Communications Technology (ICT) within local communities. This event will explore how far ICT has been utilised by local people to support community based initiatives within an international context.
Communities are not necessarily defined by neighbourhood or geography but by common interests, values or concern with specific issues such as improvement of the environment, poor service provision or the needs of particular types of poverty. Information & communications technology is increasingly turned to as a tool to facilitate organisation, develop campaigns and activities to meet these needs, either by pressure on the policy process or through, for example, the creation of self help organisations.
Within the UK, ICT has been used in community settings to construct activities and projects linked to lifelong learning, social inclusion and active citizenship and to tackle the Digital Divide.
Keynote speakers will address the use of ICT within a community context and there will be opportunities for networking and exchanging ideas through interactive workshop sessions as well as opportunities to benefit from national and international examples of best practice.
IACD is a not-for-profit, non governmental organisation. Its aim is to promote community development across international policies and programmes, to network and support community development practitioners and to encourage information and practice exchange.
The Department of Community Education at the University of Dundee has a role in bringing researchers, policy makers and practitioners together to promote and facilitate increased knowledge, understanding and professional practice within the broad field of community development, community education, community learning & development and community regeneration.
