FULFILLING OUR POTENTIAL:
MANAGING FIRST CLASS SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH
Radcliffe House, University of Warwick
18-19 March 2004
-------------------------------------
This overnight workshop for ARCISS members and others will focus on the
challenges currently facing the management of social science research. It
will run from lunchtime on Thursday 18 March to lunchtime on Friday 19
March. It will comprise a mix of presentations and discussions. It should be
of interest to research centre directors, senior administrators and any
researchers engaged in the management of projects and programmes.
In the first afternoon, Roger Jowell, former Director of the National Centre
for Social Research will offer a personal perspective on the main new
challenges facing research managers. These will include changing patterns
and options for research procurement, greater international collaboration,
career structures for research staff and the need for research leadership.
Subsequent sessions, led by ARCISS executive members will focus on the ways
in which research centres might respond to these challenges. The topics
will include: leadership and team building; staff recruitment, retention and
development; support systems; work planning and performance management;
developing new fundingstreams; and partnership working.
Above all, the seminar will provide a unique opportunity to exchange
experience.
