Apologies to Spenser Society members, for whom this news is a repeat. (Spenserians who are not Society members but would like to join this group of folks who, among other benefits, tend to be the first to hear Spenser-related announcements, please follow the "membership" link from the Society home page at <http://www.english.cam.ac.uk/spenser/society/>.)
David Baker and Jeff Knapp have asked us to announce that they are extending the deadline for submissions of abstracts for the Spenser Society panels at the 2004 MLA Convention in Philadelphia. The deadline for both panels is now March 15th.
Live dangerously. Submit.
For those of you who have already recycled your MLA Newsletter, here again are the details for both panels:
"Spenser and His Irish Contemporaries." Spenser's Ireland was rich in languages--Gaelic, English, Latin, etc.--and resonant with often conflicting commentary. How was Spenser in "dialogue" with his Irish contemporaries? 1-2-page abstracts by 15 March; David Baker <[log in to unmask]>.
"Spenser and the Gods." Has recent scholarship changed our understanding of paganism in Spenser? How and why does Spenser employ paganism in his poetic and colonial projects? Are the gods as ideologically pliable as Spenser seems to think? 1-2-page abstracts by 15 March; Jeffrey Knapp <[log in to unmask]>.
