To anyone who has used QSR's N6 and NVivo software on a laptop:
I will soon purchase a laptop to use exclusively for my research and
will appreciate advice from anyone who has experience with these
software programs on a laptop computer. Most immediately, I need to
determine the hardware specifications that will provide ample space and
power to do the job well. I'm also interested in any "optional" features
you have found to be very useful.
Presently, I'm working on a project that includes data primarily from
interviews with 16 individuals (Word transcripts are ~ 8-16 pages each,
single spaced, which amounts to 44-77 KB each). I anticipate 8-12 more
transcripts of the same length. I will, of course, be writing up the
results on the laptop as well. To facilitate writing as well as data
analysis, I plan to load on the Word Office package, Endnotes, and
either Visio or Imagination (the latter two are graphics programs).
According to QSR, minimum system requirements on any computer for NVivo
are:
1. A CD-ROM drive (to install software)
2. Processor: 400 MHz or better
3. RAM: Microsoft Windows Me 64MB minimum OR Windows 2000, XP 128MB
minimum
4. Free hard disk space required for installation: 40-125 MB (plus space
for project files)
5. Mouse: 2 button or more
6. Monitor: 800 x 600 resolution OK (1024 x 768 recommended)
7. Backup: Backup capability via network or removable disk is
recommended.
I will greatly appreciate any and all advice!!
