Philosophy of Management (formerly Reason in Practice)
PROPOSED PHILOSOPHY OF MANAGEMENT TEXTBOOK
At the Developing Philosophy of Management conference in Oxford (UK) in June
2002 participants suggested that a textbook connecting philosophy and
management studies was needed.
We are actively exploring this possibility and would be grateful for any
help you can give in ensuring the book will meet the needs of management
teachers and students. One pointer will be the philosophical work already
being done explicitly or otherwise in professional education and business
and management schools. Another source will be the experience and views of
those working with managers as teachers, coaches or consultants.
The questions below concern the role and extent of philosophy in the
management work in your institution, organisation or practice. We would be
immensely grateful if you would reply yourself and forward it to your
colleagues and other contacts. The wider the range of responses, of course,
the better we can attune the book to the needs of users.
Please answer the questions in your own terms, as fully as you wish and
email your reply to

We will summarise the answers in due course and send a copy to all who
contribute.
As token of our appreciation every respondent will be entered into a draw
for a complimentary 1 year subscription to Philosophy of Management (or free
1 year extension if already a subscriber).

1. What particular courses and teaching activity currently include a
philosophical element?
(Feel free to include not only formally taught programmes but also topics
that may be taught out of personal interest or student demand.)
2. What aspects of your personal, departmental or institutional
management research activities involve elements of philosophy?
3. At what levels in your business and management educational portfolio
are philosophical issues and material included?
Would you say that this is where they are best located?
What does this imply for the way student learning is managed by you as
teachers or by them as learners?
4 What benefits are gained by the inclusion of philosophical elements
in the management curriculum?
What learning outcomes are achieved or supported by philosophical elements
in the curriculum?
What value do you and/or your students find in philosophical content?
5 What do students with work experience say about the relevance of
such philosophical material to their work?
What do pre-experience students feel about the relevance of the
philosophical approaches and/or material to what they expect to need in the
world of work?
6 Are there areas where you feel more philosophical content would be
valuable?
Are there areas where you feel that philosophical content would be
inappropriate or misplaced?
8 Do you have plans to increase the scope of philosophy in the
curriculum or your practice? If so, in what directions?
9 In very general terms, what would you say should be the role of
philosophy, if any, in the management and business education curriculum?
10 Would you want to make use of a text on philosophy and management?
What topics or approaches would you want to see in such a book?
Is there a textbook model you would suggest we follow?
11 If you feel that such a text would be useful, what should it do to
be of maximum use to
(a) teachers
(b) students?
12. Does you institution or organisation specialise or major in any
particular areas of business and management eg Manufacturing, HR or
Marketing?
13. Which definition of philosophy do you find most useful in your own
teaching work?
Have we missed something?
Please add anything else you would like us to know or judge would be helpful
in producing a book or practical value. Lessons from your own experience
will be very welcome!
