The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim is a centre for
technological education and research in Norway, with a solid foundation in the natural sciences.
This tradition is interwoven with broadly-based expertise in the classical university disciplines of
the humanities, medicine and the social sciences. NTNU is Norway´s largest university with over
20,000 students and 3,500 employees. The annual budget is approximately 350 million USD.
At present, the Department of Product Design has one adjunct professor, six associate
professorships, and eight research scholars. The Department is responsible for teaching the core
topics of the MSc course in Industrial Design Engineering. The current research activities at the
Department are: Interaction Design, Design Methodology, Ecological Design, and Design
Management. The Department wishes to focus on the strategic use of design as a common ground
for the future research activities.
The Professorship will have specific responsibilities for teaching and research related to the
strategic use of design, with either Ecological Design or Design Methodology as possible fields of
specialization. Weight will be placed on the ability to initiate, establish, and supervise research and
development work. If all other matters are equal in the evaluation of candidates, weight will be
placed on professional design work and good communication skills.
