Dear all,
I'm looking for a volunteer(s) to take over as list "owner" of bes-mire.
I've taken on other commitments, and this seems like an opportune moment to
hand over to someone with fresh ideas and enthusiasm for taking the list
forward. At the moment, the list is not being used very much. My personal
view is that it either needs a good shaking-up, or closing-down. So, if you
think bes-mire is worthwhile, and want to see it continue, read on!
Eligibility: The principal list owner should be employed by a UK higher
education institution, normally with an 'ac.uk' style email address.
(JISCmail is sponsored by the UK higher education community, hence this
restriction.)
What is involved: The service is largely automated. The owner receives
error messages - every once in a while, you will need to delete email
addresses that are no longer valid (I confess, I haven't done this for a
long time). You might also get the occasional message from someone who has
problems with sending (often because they are registered from work and are
trying to send from a home computer). Other than that, the owner could
actively "recruit" new members (e.g., by posting fliers at conferences) and
try to stimulate discussion on the list. S/he might want to develop the
web-site in new ways. S/he could also opt to moderate messages (i.e.,
screening them before sending out to the list), but I haven't found this
necessary so far.
Who can help: The list owner could nominate someone else as a co-owner,
e.g., to cover during field work/holidays. The JISCmail team has produced
easy-to-understand documentation on all the things you could ever possibly
need/want to do as list owner. There is also a helpline if you have any
technical problems.
So, if you're interested, send me an email ([log in to unmask]) by March
1st at the very latest. If I don't have any volunteers by then, I'll put
the wheels in motion to shut the list down.
