PhD Research Studentships in Computer Science
Interaction, Media, and Communication Research Group,
Department of Computer Science,
Queen Mary, University of London
The Department of Computer Science at Queen Mary, University of London
invites applications for up to twelve research scholarships for new PhD
students starting in September 2004. These are available to UK, EU and
international students and pay for tuition fees and/or a tax-free
maintenance grant of up to £12,500 p.a. for 3 years. The department has
research strengths in: logic and semantics, computer vision, risk
analysis and decision support, information retrieval and interaction,
media and communication. In addition, we especially encourage
inter-disciplinary research and there are earmarked studentships for
cross-department collaboration. Further information on research in the
department may be found at www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk/research/
Funds are available in particular to support high quality applicants to
the Interaction, Media and Communication Research group
(http://www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk/research/imc/). We welcome people with
interests in human-human communication, multi-modal interaction,
engagement and creativity or accessibility.
We are one of the UK's leading departments of Computer Science
(www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk) with a comprehensive and supportive research
training environment. Here are some of the reasons why our postgraduate
students have chosen to develop their research with us:
• Research quality: internationally leading groups
(www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk/research/) in theoretical, applied and
multi-disciplinary research,
• Resources: generous office and laboratory space, excellent systems
support, well-stocked libraries with extensive online resources -
including the University of London's Senate House library - and support
for postgraduates to attend international conferences;
• Atmosphere: friendly staff and an open, encouraging and stimulating
environment;
• Training: specialised seminars and training courses run by the
department, the Graduate School (www.qmul.ac.uk/postgrad/) and the
University of London, supervision committee with regular monitoring of
progress, annual postgraduate conference
(www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk/conferences/pg2003/);
• Location: as the only campus-based university in central London, Queen
Mary enjoys an enviable location in a vibrant part of East London,
between Docklands and the City. Situated next to the newly landscaped
Mile End Park - and one of London's main cycle routes - Queen Mary
offers students an attractive environment in which to study
(www.qmul.ac.uk/contact/mileend.shtml). Our new student village has
accommodation for over 1,000 students on campus
(www.qmul.ac.uk/undergrad/stuvill.shtml).
Applications can be made either on-line or by post as described on the
College postgraduate web page (www.qmul.ac.uk/postgrad/). Informal
applications by email may be submitted to the PhD admissions secretary
Ms. Carla Benjamin (email: [log in to unmask], tel:
+44(0)20-7882-5200) including a short statement of your background and
research interests.
