Themed issue of Management Decision
Qualitative methods in management research
Guest Editors: Catherine Cassell, Anna Buehring (University of Sheffield),
Gillian Symon (Birkbeck College) and Phil Johnson Sheffield Hallam
University)
Traditionally the management field has been dominated by research studies
based on quantitative techniques of data collection and analysis. Yet
increasingly there is an interest in the ‘in-depth’ studies that are
produced from qualitative work. Research stemming from qualitative
techniques covers a whole spectrum of methods and can be located within a
wide range of epistemological perspectives. Many of these techniques are not
well known or utilised by researchers in the management arena despite the
potentially unique perspectives they could provide on important and
contemporary management research issues. Indeed commentators have argued
that the outputs of qualitative research maybe of more relevance and
interest to management practitioners than those of traditional methods.
This themed issue aims:
· To provide an overview of the current state of the art of qualitative
methods in management research
· To demonstrate the significant impact that outputs of qualitative research
can have on everyday managerial practice
· To highlight the diverse range of subject areas to which qualitative
research can contribute
· To provide a showcase for excellent examples of applied qualitative
empirical work.
We are seeking papers that creatively address the above aims. Papers should
be submitted according to the journal guidelines to Professor Catherine
Cassell, University of Sheffield Management School, 9 Mappin Street,
Sheffield S1 4DT, [log in to unmask] by 30th June 2004. The expected
publication date of the journal is October 2005.
