The expression ‘Fraser competent’:
Fraser competency is when an under 16 year old is deemed as being fit to
consent to treatment on her own, without parental consent. The case was the
Victoria Gillick case surrounding her under 16 daughter being prescribed
contraceptives without her mother knowing. The medical profession won and
as far as abortion is concerned, providing 2 dr's agree that the young
woman has a thorough understanding of the procedure she is going to go
through it is legal that she can consent for herself, without her parents
being informed. The name of the judge in the original case was Fraser,
hence fraser competent.
It is a reminder for the doctor who is obtaining consent that if the client
is under 16 he must note on the consent form that she is Fraser competent
