Mapping networks of new genetic knowledge: the 'geneticisation' of heart
disease
Abstract
The presentation explores the possible 'geneticisation' of heart disease,
i.e. a shift from the dominant individual and social explanation to genetic
causation. This raises questions of responsibility and blame, risk and
fatalism, with consequences for individual experience and medical practice.
Drawing on research in Glasgow, the presentation offers a network analysis
of two key moments in the transformation of heart disease in the context of
the new genetics. The presentation will argue that knowledges of heart
disease are diverse, contested and collective, involving social actors
including geneticists, heart consultants and patients, as well as non-human
actors, such as genes, institutions and heart disease itself.
