How comparative are comparative surveys?
Roger Jowell will describe the design and execution of the 22-nation
European Social Survey which he and the rest of the London ESS team now run
from City University. He will describe the pitfalls and pleasures of
pursuing cross-national equivalence in the face of obstacles such as
cultural and language differences - which necessitate more than 25
different language-versions of the questionnaire - and a variety of other
deeply-entrenched national methodological ‘habits’. Despite all these
familiar difficulties, however, the first round of the ESS has now been
successfully completed, the second round is well under way, and the third
round is already clearly in prospect. Roger will reveal some preliminary
findings from the first round, the data for which are now available to all
on the internet in an easy to use form.
Date: 26th January 2004. Time: 16:45–18.00
