Hi Jeff,
I supervised a thesis a couple of years ago, and we have had a paper in press (ref below) on transparency issues in writing about a GT project using N-Vivo (the paper was presented at 2003 Strategies in Qualitative Research: Methodological issues and practices in using QSR NVivo and NUD*IST (http://www.ioe.ac.uk/conferences/nvivo/ <http://www.ioe.ac.uk/conferences/nvivo/> ).
The reference for the paper is:
Bringer, J.D., Johnston, L.H. & Brackenridge, C.H. (in press 2004). Maximising transparency in a doctoral thesis: The complexities of writing about the use of QSR*NVIVO within a grounded theory study. Qualitative Research.
The thesis abstract is at: http://www.qsr.com.au/userprojects/abstracts/bringer.htm <http://www.qsr.com.au/userprojects/abstracts/bringer.htm> )
If you are in the UK at the beginning of September, you will find further examples and discussion around this issue and much more at the 2004 Strategies conference: (http://www.dur.ac.uk/strategies.conference/ <http://www.dur.ac.uk/strategies.conference/> )
We are in the process of finishing a second paper from the thesis looking specifically at GT process and N-Vivo- details will be posted on the qsr site in due course www.qsr.com.au <http://www.qsr.com.au/>
For anyone else who may be interested, I will be publishing training dates shortly for a one-day course looking at the use of N-Vivo within a PhD thesis. Details will be posted via my web link from the QSR trainers page: http://www.qsr.com.au/support/consultantstrainers/trainers.asp#United%20Kingdom <http://www.qsr.com.au/support/consultantstrainers/trainers.asp#United%20Kingdom>
Best wishes
Lynne Johnston PhD, CPsychol.

Subject: Grounded Theory
Hi,
Can anyone recommend some good examples of theses that have used grounded
theory where:
- the thesis structure effectively reflects grounded theory method in the
way that it positions the literature review and the findings chapters?
- the thesis illustrates the data effectively, combining it with the
literature using the constant comparative method?
Or perhaps you might know of a web-based source that discusses these
topics?
Hope you can help.
Jeff
