Planning, Fund Raising and Tendering for Digitisation Projects
Workshop leader: Simon Tanner (KDCS Director)
Location: King's College London
Date: 6th April 2003 (1 day)
Cost: £75 (ex VAT) includes lunch.

Audience: aimed mainly at managers in museums, libraries, local history
units and county archives.

Context: Digitisation (the conversion to digital formats) has become an
integral part of the information delivery chain and something that many
managers need to become more informed upon. The trials and tribulations for
digitisation in the past, in terms of the technology and cost, have made it
seem a luxury. However, digitisation has now entered the mainstream of
activity and this event would aim to demonstrate means by which managers
can make digitisation a viable and efficient activity to deliver new access
to information resources.

The workshop will be mainly presented and led by Simon Tanner, Director of
Digital Consultancy Services for King's College London. Simon Is an
authority on digitisation and project management who has authored Digital
Futures: strategies for the information age with Marilyn Deegan and
provided consultancy to many of the major cultural and heritage
institutions in UK, Europe and America.

Programme:

Session 1: Why digitise?
What are the pros and cons of digitisation.
Selection criteria for digitisation - establishing the criteria to
establish for selecting resources to convert to digital formats

Session 2: Planning and fund raising.
The importance of good planning to the success of projects and how it can
enhance fund raising. Important issues to consider in fund raising.

Session 3: Tendering for services (plus in-house versus outsourcing).
What are the respective advantages of each approach and the key issues to
consider when deciding which route to take.
Tendering for services. Whether buying external digitisation services or
for in-house work purchasing IT systems or equipment then there will be an
element of tendering involved. This session will give advice of approaches
to tendering and the critical information to look out for in responses.

Session 4: Skills, training and recruitment.
What are the key skills needed and how are they to be delivered into the
workplace.

Conclusion: Next steps and future directions.

The programme will be open to questions and encourage interaction with the
audience.
