Free course: Using GIS to analyse historical data

Hosted by the Department of Geography, University of Portsmouth in collaboration with AHDS History. Sponsored by the ESRC's Research Methods Programme.

The Department of Geography of the University of Portsmouth, in association with AHDS History, is running a two-day course on the use of Geographical Information Systems to analyse historical data.  The course is sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council's Research Methods Programme and is free to participants. This course builds on the success of our summer school on using GIS in the arts and humanities (see http://www.port.ac.uk/departments/academic/geography/summerschool/) and two one-day GIS workshops hosted by the AHDS (http://ahds.ac.uk/gis_workshop.htm). 

The course offers an introduction to both the theory and the practice of using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to the analysis historical data. As such it will be relevant to historians, historical geographers, demographers, and others with an interest in the past. The instructors are all academics with significant experience in using GIS to conduct historical research. The majority of the course will focus on practical work in an IT lab with state-of-the-arts GIS facilities. 

Who should come?
This workshop will appeal to members of academic staff and post-graduate students who are using or are thinking of using GIS to support their research or teaching. We are also keen to attract professionals in other relevant sectors interested developing hands-on experience of using GIS to analyse historical data. 
The workshop is intended as an introduction to using GIS to analyse historical data, so it will suit novices or those who want to brush up previous experience. No prior knowledge of using GIS software will be assumed although the issues raised should be relevant to people with GIS experience as we will be focussing on specific techniques and approaches relevant to quantitative analysis of historical data.

What is provided?
The course is funded under the ESRC's Research Methods Programme. Their funding includes the cost of one night's accommodation in a local hotel in Portsmouth and meals from lunch on the 1st April until lunch on the 2nd as well as teas and coffees. Participants will be expected to pay their own travel costs. In addition, to secure hotel accommodation we require a deposit of £50.00, refundable on attendance.
