XINJIANG PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE
Lecture at Great Britain China Centre
THUBRON | DILLON | TYLER
Wednesday, January 14, 2004; 6.30pm
At the dead heart of Asia lies a land of sand and snow, where the Turkic, Muslim Uyghurs must
accommodate increasing numbers of Han Chinese migrants. The PRC's largest province arguably worries
Beijing far more than headline-grabbing Tibet. Join three experts to find out why, as they discuss
Xinjiang's past, present and future: Colin Thubron (tbc) is a novelist and travel writer of books
including The Lost Heart of Asia and Behind The Wall. Christian Tyler is a journalist and author of
Wild West China: The Taming of Xinjiang (John Murray, August 2003); Dr Michael Dillon of Durham
University is author of Xinjiang: China's Muslim Far Northwest (RoutledgeCurzon, October 2003).
Books will be available on the night, at a specially discounted price.
Venue: Great Britain-China Centre, 15 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8PS
Tickets: Free to GBCC members/subscribers and Chopsticks Club members. £3 at the door to all others.
Everyone please RSVP to tel: 020 7235-6696, fax: 020 245-6885, [log in to unmask], www.gbcc.org.uk.
Time: 6pm for 6.30pm start. Drinks. 8pm finish (approximately).
