I have recently subscribed to the Disability Research List in the hope
that someone can help me with some information.
A group of people representing the government, community and philanthropic
sectors, are in the process of developing a set of principles which can be
used when assessing applications for funding for disability related
research or projects. These principles could be useful for the
philanthropic sector, but not limited to that sector. In Victoria we
have a "Disability Affinity Group" which is made up of representatives
from philanthropic trusts who are interested in funding disability related
projects. These principles, when developed, will be of particular
interest to this group.
I think there is some agreement that projects should:
be directed/guided by people with a disability,
focus on choice, self-determination and empowerment of people with a
disability,
further the rights of people with a disability,
consider environmental and societal barriers (where relevant).
further the citizenship of people with a disability,
avoid segregation,
There are probably many other principles that could be included/further
developed, these are some just of the top of my head.
I would be grateful if anyone has any thoughts on this, or could direct me
to any existing principles or relevant information.
