Hi, I am a student leaning disability nurse, and I am currently writing an article about Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest'
I am particularly interested in the character of Caliban, and the way he is disempowered and oppressed, overtly by Prospero, and unwittingly by
Miranda in a way which I feel is analogous to the way that much of the practice of professionals in Learning Disability services can oppress the people
they are meant to be enabling/empowering despite the current rhetoric about choice and inclusion. I am finding there is plenty to write about, as the
play is rich in issues about social attitudes and roles, the use of language and power. .
I would be interested to hear of any good articles on issues about disability in Shakespeare, particularly about Caliban himself. I am also trying to find
out where I can get hold of a copy of a film of 'The Tempest' made by the DPU and starring Mik Scarlett as Caliban. This film apparently took months to
make, but was never broadcast. I would also love to hear from anyone who has been involved in any other productions of 'The Tempest' - I know there
was an adaption of this play put on by the 'Common Ground Sign Dance Theatre', but as yet have not managed to get hold of a copy of their
production notes
I would be really grateful to hear from anyone with information in these areas.
Cheers!
