Hi everyone,
I hope most of you have had at least a little holiday and are looking
forward to 2004 :) I am a theatre student undertaking a dissertation on
Theatre Workshop in Edinburgh, Scotland and I hope that I may be able to
obtain a little help in finding information regarding:
-Any books/articles on the birth of disability arts, particularly theatre.
I want to overview the key developments in theatre and the current social
model approaches of companies and then to see where Theatre Workshop fits in
- the strategies and impact of their inclusive company and the hosting of
the bi-annual Degenerate festivals.
- The plays I plan to look at are "D.A.R.E." which is rehearsing in Glasgow
then touring soon. I would also like to look at the company's productions
at Degenerate last year: "Adventures in a Bath" and perhaps also "I have
Before me a Remarkable Document given to me by a young lady from Rwanda."
I would also like to look at independent performers who have performed at
Degenerate, in particular Mat Fraser and his play "Sealboy:Freak" and also
Nabil Shaban's "I am the Walrus."
-Anyone who has information or opinions on the work of the inclusive company
and/or the Degenerate festivals please offer it to me :) I am trying to
ascertain the impact the company is making in effecting the social model and
whether they are being taken seriously as a a professional company or being
ghettoised as "disability arts" or as any other label.
-Also, any information regarding the ghettoisation/difficulties of
disability arts would be brilliant too. I volunteered at the LDAF's 5th
International Disability Festival and that was one of the issues that arose
there.
-Also, are there are any disabled theatre practicioners who would not mind
answering a few questions over email ? Questions like: the current status
of disabeld practicioners in theatre, particularly in Britain, key moments
that have led to the present state, inspirational people and events, the
difficulties and/or progress they feel they are making, what developments
they forsee and so on...
I think that is all for now, although I am sure I have missed something.
Thank you all very much for your time and I hope to get some good
replies....:)
Thanks again and best wishes,
Lee
