Seen in Tesco recently, a "School Bar'', which from its position, about 1.4 -
1.5 metres up on the shelves, is apparently aimed not at kids but at parents
who may be trying to get their kids to eat a more healthy diet, ie more fruit,
less sugar/fat/salt.
Temptingly they come in a range of brightly coloured packets, strawberry red,
apple green, orange orange etc, and boast they contain 3 times their weight
in fruit, pureed, concentrated.
Nice and healthy, except that each 100g pack, x 5 bars, contains a total of
62% sugar, and the whole 100g pack contains 361 Kcal. I don't know how many
calories a schoolchild is supposed to eat but that's around 1/6 of the adult
calorie daily requirement. At almost two thirds pure sugar, this doesn't help with
increasing child obesity, and tooth decay, type II diabetes etc
Can anyone else find a 'fruit snack' thats even more calorific/sugary?
PS this Tesco also had cornflake bars, flavoured with chocolate, etc, with up
to 410 Kcal per 100g, but at least these dont market themselves as fruit
snacks, though the cornflake part may suggest healthy foods - not.
