Quality Assurance for Open and Distributed Learning Event
Tuesday 27th April 2004, Geoffrey Manton Building, Manchester Metropolitan
University
The eLearning Research Centre in conjunction with the universities in
Manchester (MMU, Salford, UMIST, Manchester University) has arranged a
one-day seminar event to address the issue of Quality Assurance (QA) for
Open and Distributed Learning (ODL) (encompassing e-Learning and distance
learning).
The rapid growth in provision of such courses has raised some fundamental
issues of the appropriateness and scope of present QA processes. Many
practitioners as well as institutional QA personnel are unsure how current
QA procedures, including annual and 5 year reviews as well as the new
institutional audit process launched in England by the Quality Assurance
Agency (QAA) in 2002 will apply to their ODL courses. There is an awareness,
from practitioners and from experience elsewhere, not only that a much wider
scope of issues may need to be considered and that current procedures may be
inadequate but that the types of support and advice made available may not
be adequate.
This event brings together ODL practitioners and QA personnel from the
universities in Manchester and highly experienced representatives from the
broader UK Higher Education QA community including Peter Wiliams the Chief
Executive of the QAA. The event will address, grass roots, institutional,
national
and international issues for QA.
Delegates are invited, free of charge, from all Higher Education
Institutions. It is expected that the event will be of interest to all QA
practitioners
including QA staff, course administrators, developers and tutors involved in
the
delivery of open and distributed learning.
Full details including the event program, online booking, speakers and
abstracts for each of the session can be found on the Manchester University
Distributed Learning Unit Web Site:
