Sorry colleagues, both items suggested so far would send me home
immediately. Wouldn't it be better, in the light of the subject, to do
something via the VLE (using the chat room maybe)?

You could try human bingo. Basically you create a bingo card but
instead of having numbers you have something like 'owns a red car',
'plays a musical instrument' on the squares. As each person meets
someone meeting the criteria they cross out the square. This provides a
great deal of interaction between everyone and you can set a time limit.

The old "three things about yourself neighbour that aren't immediately
obvious" seems to get things rolling. Put people into pairs, they take
2 minutes each way telling each other 3 three things about themselves
that aren't immediately apparent (this means people can be as
discreet/disclosive as they like). Then each person introduces their
partner's three things to the wider group.
Good when time is short.

Subject: [VLES] Fun icebreakers for VLE summer school
Dear list members,
For the first time, in September we will be running a two day event to
train academic staff in our insitution's VLE (up till now, numbers have
been such that all training has been delivered one-to-one, and whilst we
will continue delivering one-to-one training where we can, we now need
to offer an intensive session for about 30 staff in one go).
I'm trying to come up with a fun (and relevant) icebreaker for the first
session of the course, where participants and course facilitators will
be introducing themselves. If you've used good icebreakers that have
raised a smile and helped participants from different departments start
getting to know each other, I'd be very grateful to hear about what you
did!
Looking forward to hearing from list members,
With best wishes,
Zoe
