Dear Jacquie, Malcolm et el,
Your posts have made me wonder about staff resourcing.
How many roles are enough for VLEs? I imagine that with increased use of
a system, new roles will be needed. Even a given role may have to change,
it might be only slightly but the inbuilt limitations of that role could
be very inconvenient. Further, if you were able to identify ten or twenty
roles that provide sufficient coverage, then supporting all these roles
will require a lot of resources - the documentation alone would be
considerable. You would also need to know how each role relates to each
other.
Compare this kind of arrangement with the Bodington VLE, where a user's
rights are defined at a finer level of granularity - 'out of the box'
there aren't roles as such, though the system administrator naturally has
many rights. Instead, rights are defined per resource (generally a web
page with its own url) in terms of a number of pre-defined permissions
such as 'see','view','create','manage','post',and so on.
The key right is 'manage', as it enables one to grant rights to others.
This flexibility means that it is very easy to devolve responsibility and
this can be carried on, as far as one needs. With this arrangement, it
becomes very easy to set up varying levels of participation, ranging from
simple involvement such as moderating a discussion board, through to
administering an area containing dozens of courses. You can if you wish
define your own roles as fits.
I think that the nature of roles has an important bearing on staff
resourcing. A centrally hosted service needn't have a huge team if the
VLE's workload is spread broadly as above. That way, more resources can
be used for development.
Such organic use may not be everyone's cup of tea as it is, for example,
not so easy to control centrally, but I'm quite sure that it offers a
great deal of freedom for learning and teaching.
Regards,
Paul
