This article is particularly interesting because I can remember
attending IITT eLearning seminars in 2001, a UKeU meeting and
other similar events since where there were discussions about
ownership and re-use of material and course / student generated e-
constructions..
My view is that whatever gets put into a VLE, LMS or other e-
solution should be able to come out again. In other words when
implementing any e-solution always plan for a divorce from it. If it's
not possible to upload and download from a particular e-solution or
VLE tool then course designers/academics need to be able to
make an informed decision about whether the time taken to create
the instructional event, etc is worth the effort. If the event, learning
object, etc cannot be re-used, re-purposed or the resulting data
cannot be used or exchanged with another e-solution is this an
appropriate e-solution at all?
Some market leaders are moving towards conformance with
industry standards such as IMS and SCORM and hence it should
be easier to both migrate material and divorce from this type of
VLE (if required). For example WebCT 4.1CE includes an IMS
content migration utility and more of the embedded tools such as
self test now include a download option to ensure that work effort is
not trapped within the product.
Devisors of e-solutions, developers of open source systems and
purchasers of open or closed systems need to take into account
difficulties and inefficiencies associated with "lock-in". Since,
however good the pedagogical solution is, if the e-solution is
unsupported, becomes obsolete or unfashionable then much time
and effort will be wasted.
