PhD CASE Studentship Opportunity
Demand Responsive Transport Systems: From the margins to the mainstream.
Department for Transport
A three year PhD programme commencing on 1 October 2004 is available based
at the Transport Studies Group, Department of Civil and Building
Engineering, Loughborough University and is part of a collaborative project
with the UK Department for Transport.
Demand Responsive Transport systems can provide transport solutions in
circumstances where conventional bus services are difficult to sustain and
to customers who cannot afford taxi fares. With new regulations allowing
flexible bus and shared taxi/private hire services, this is a growing area
where interesting developments are taking place and established schemes are
expanding.
The aim of the project is to monitor the development of such DRT schemes in
the UK and overseas in order to investigate how the Department for
Transport might best support them in the future. In particular, it will
identify what policy objectives and market niches are being addressed by
the schemes, as well as any developments in the operational sphere (e.g.
due to technological improvements in software or communications, or to
improved institutional collaboration between public transport, social
service, community transport and educational transport operators).
Tuition fees and a maintenance grant (circa £9,500) plus an annual stipend
from the DfT is available as an EPSRC CASE studentship for a New Academic
Award. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to
work at the Department for Transport for three months over the course of
the PhD. Standard EPSRC conditions for student eligibility apply (see
www.epsrc.ac.uk).
The closing date for applications is 31 May 2004.
